Level progress

Installation:

The downloaded zip file is 59.7Mb, so if you are on dial-up it may take a while to download. Once unpacked you will find a read me with the conditions of use and a dual activation/set up module. Installation is simple – click on the set up/activation file, and then select the path you wish your game to be installed to. The default path is C:\Program files\KingsSmith.

The installed file is 128Mb in size and shortcuts are installed to both the desktop and start menu programs list. There is no shortcut to the uninstaller, but you can find one within the installed game. You can create a shortcut to that if you wish. You’ll find details of how to create a shortcut HERE for the start menu/programs list.

Introduction:

Can you fulfil your dreams? Will you become a King’s personal smith? There can be only one! Prepare for a challenge!

King’s Smith is a airly new time management game from Running Pillow (released Dec 2009), the developer who gave us Galatron a few weeks ago.

Quote from developers introduction to the game:

Who says a woman can’t be a blacksmith? Well, pretty much everyone, except your grandfather. He’s a master smith, and is willing to take you on as an apprentice in King’s Smith. As a young apprentice blacksmith of your grandpa you are slowly learning how to become a master blacksmith. Through your journey around a kingdom, meeting new challenges, you will encounter many strangers and learn many new abilities that will help you to upgrade your armours and equipment, which you can then sell to make a nice profit. Make a name for yourself, and you may just find yourself working as the King’s Smith!

Goldsmith created

The Game:

King’s Smith is a time management game which is simple and straightforward to pick up the game play easily. When you first start an account (you can set up multiple accounts, so this game is ideal for the whole family) there is a simple tutorial that walks you through the stages of the game. I’ve taken screenshots of all of the early stages which you can see via the link below under images. The graphics are cartoon like and well done though not as crisp as games like farm frenzy. The game is fully mouse controlled and will save your progress up to the last completed game. It will not save progress part way through a level. The game is timed, but only for the purposes of awarding you either gold silver or Bronze stars. The game will always at least award you a bronze star, even if you take more than the allocated time to complete each level.

As the blacksmith you must buy rusty, old equipment from the vendor in the wagon. He will offer many types of wares at different prices. You will be able to tell whether the price is good or not by the thumbs up and down. If you turn down the price another wagon soon appears. Occasionally there is also a blackmarketeer, who will sell you improved goods for a good price. After you buy from the vendor, you place your rusty part on a stone platform where it will create revenue for you, or alternatively put it in your workplace. (the building with the outdoor fireplace), a worker will leave the home and work on your piece. Once completed, you hang your ware either back on the stone platform or sell it at the bottom right. People will come look at your goods and offer money for them. You can haggle with the price. To help you a thumbs up or down will appear telling you whether the price is good or not. Do remember to move any equipment that you placed in the smithy once it has been repaired otherwise you’ll be losing valuable income. As you progress new selling platforms become available and new types of buildings for making gold or jewel encrusted wares available. The more you process a an item you’ve purchased, the more profit you will make. try to get the most expensive items on the stone platforms as they will create more revenue for you at regular intervals. there is an indicator that will let you know when revenue is going to be credited to you.

Bartering

Like other simulation games, the stats are all on the bottom and you will get audio confirmation for many actions taking place. As the play progresses, more items will be offered for you to repair or improve then sell on or earn cash by keeping the equipment. In addition, you will need to buy raw materials that are on sale often, and build more buildings to expand your business. Blueprints for new buildings will become available throughout the game. Occasionally the raw materials can be purchased at sale prices. this is the best time to purchase your raw materials. Later in the game you can purchase power ups that improve the amount of discount you can get. It will get quite busy as you progress, but upgrades from the shop will help ease the work load occasionally. Once you meet your goals, which are listed to the top left of the screen, you go on to the next level. The end of level stats board will count up all your resources. these are allocated points which are then converted to gold coins, which can then be used to purchase upgrades or new items to buy. You can also upgrade the vendors wagons so that they sell more items to you each visit. There are more options to choose from like gold swords, more buildings to erect and employees to hire. There are five areas to complete each with several stages, so there’s lots to accomplish in this cute looking time management game

Conclusion:

Don’t let the quaint graphic fool you into thinking this is a simple game. Initially the game starts off quite slow. slow enough for me to enjoy playing this game. (I rarely enjoy time management games as I like to play at my own pace). I liked the ability to be able to haggle with your vendors and clients for a better price. The game reminded me a lot of the Farm Frenzy series which is about the only time management game other than this one that I really like.

The game was easy to learn and play thanks to the straightforward tutorial that is devoted to the first level, though it continues whenever something new is introduced into the game. I managed to capture all the screens up to level six. I wasn’t able to play anymore with the demo i used to write up this review. The game started off a little slow initially, but soon speeds up. I found the game play was quite addictive. The cartoon characters and background were entertaining and the music appropriate, though as mentioned below, you can change this to whatever you fancy if you wish. The easy going speed and the graphics are ideal for the family game and I think you’ll have lots of fun playing together with this game. It’s worth a good 7.5 out of 10 or even maybe an 8 for family orientated game play and a riveting game plan. (I rarely give games 8 or more, so this being from a genre I don’t usually play would indicate that I think it’s a worthwhile game to keep in your games library. I’ll definitely be keeping this one. Thank you to Running Pillow and the game giveaway team for giving and finding this little gem of a game.

—————————————————————————————————

Additional Information:

Music:

If you don’t like the in game music, or feel like a change (changing the music to some of your favourite music can help towards the enjoyment of playing the game) you can easily change the music by swapping the music files for ones of your own. You will need to rename your music files to the ones found within the installed games music folder because they are in the .ogg format. This is easily done by using one of the many freely available converters. There are several audio converters to be found in the freeware library. I would back up the original music just in case you run into problems; but, if you forget you can always install the demo and use the music from that if required.

You’ll find the music files by following the path:

C:\Program files\KingsSmith\resources\audio\music

You can find free audio converters HERE

—————————————————————————————————

Other similar games:

You can download several time management games from Gametop called Lovely Kitchen, Apple Pie, Wendy’s Wellness, Travel Agency and Cake Queen.

You can download any one of the above free games HERE

You can get loads of time management games from MyPlayCity now. Just look at the titles available totally for free:

Cake Shop 2, Fashion Craze, Nanny Mania, Beach Party Craze, Magic Farm: Ultimate flower, Cake Shop, Wendy’s Wellness, Jenny’s fish Shop, Lovely kitchen and Farm Frenzy 1 & 2. All of the MyPlayCity games are available HERE

N.B.

Please do remember that the games from both sites will open up your browser when you close the game down, but it is totally innocuous. You may also find that during the installation process check boxes will appear indicating tool bars and even your home page may be changed, but you can stop this by un-checking the box. Gametop are increasingly resorting to pop ups as well, so ensure your pop up blocker is primed. All that said, the games from both sites are safe and of a good quality, so if you’re looking for more time management games for free, they are the places to visit.

Sandbox of God Revamped

Installation:

The downloaded zip file is 15.9Mb in side and unpacks to a dual activation and set up module (the file with the key image) and a read me document. To install and activate the game just click on the file with the key symbol which is orange in colour, (may look light green if you’re colour blind). By default the game installs to:

C:\Program files\The Sandbox of God Remastered

but this can be changed if you wish. The final installation size is 17.9Mb. A shortcut is installed to the desktop and the Start Menu program list. You can uninstall the game via the Start menu shortcut or directly from the installed folder.

Opening page

The following are reviews and information from various sources. I’ve had such a busy week, that I though I’d save time by posting this information rather than write a full review of my own. I apologise for this, but I just didn’t have the time to write one, (which is a pity because I really like this game). I’ve played the original freeware version of The Sandbox of God loads of times and loved it, so when the developer decided to re-master the original I was ready to purchase it just as soon as it was released. The game as stated by the developer is DRM free, which is great (and for those who don’t know what that means, there is no online registration required for the purchased version).

In my opinion it’s a great indie game that’s well worth the paltry sum of $3.95. However, today you don’t even have to pay for it.

—————————————————————————————————–

The Game:

Today’s remastered version of the game is built on the updated 2004 release of The Sandbox of God. The main differences between the freeware version (v1.52) and the commercial version (v1.56) are the latter remastered version has two new game play modes called ‘Warfare’ and the ‘Simulated Boardgame’ Modes. The game also includes all the updates made to the original freeware version such as using the latest Game Maker 8 engine instead of Game Maker 5; which basically means faster processing. There’s also a new save system and you can play the game in a slightly larger resolution than from the original; though when you consider the size of the average flat screen monitor now, the retro screen resolution of 800 x 600 seems rather absurd, but this is because the new version is just a remastered version of the original. You can play the game in full screen via the toggle in the options menu, but there will be a large black border filling in the area not covered by the game. If you wanted the game area to look larger, with a smaller black border you would have to temporarily reduce the size of your screen resolution via the properties window.

The options menu contains a music toggle, the windowed/full screen toggle, an erase data button, which enables you to restart the level and a go back button that takes you to the main menu. The main menu gives you access to news and updates as well as any patches that may be available.

I’m not sure whether the giveaway version will qualify you for updates due to the giveaway clauses that you can find in the read me that accompany the game in the zipped download file, but I don’t see how that function can be omitted from the giveaway version. The best thing to do is contact the developer if and when an update has been made to see if it is possible. Choosing ‘New Game’ from the main menu opens up a new screen that gives you access to all three available modes, that is Classic Mode, Simulated Boardgame Mode and Warfare Mode. The news and updates button also gives you access to a spoiler free hints guide that is very useful for those new to the game.

Quote by the developer:

As man sits atop the world, enjoying the fruits of his labour, evil rabbits plot revenge. Defend man’s civilization as you purchase new defences and upgrades, and prepare to do battle with the ever-multiplying civilization of rabbits. Use your godly powers of lighting and destruction to destroy rabbit armies and huts…provided that you have enough cash, of course. Unlock new cards by beating Sandbox mode and see how far into the future you can survive!

When you choose the Warfare mode you can follow the online guide (via the menu once you choose the Warfare mode) by clicking on the online guide button, which explains what the Warfare mode is and lists all the different cards such as Lightning, Wind, Man, Earthquakes, Medicinal, Seedlings, Plagues , Comets, Explosives plus several more (see the three images below for the full list and explanations).

The objective of this game is to survive wave after wave of rabbits over the course of many eras, until man cannot defend themselves any more. There are many tools at your disposal to help you in this quest, so let’s break it down!

You’ll notice the store at the beginning of the game. You can buy powers from here and add them to your inventory. You can hold up to ten cards in a single battle round, assuming you have the game cash to purchase them. Any cards left over at the end of a round will carry over to the next round.

Your main city’s health is displayed over itself by a bar graph; you cannot place any items within the dotted radius, or move any units within those boundaries, (see the images above and below).

Additional Information:

The original Sandbox of God was freeware. You can download that version ERE . Just look to the top left of the page for the download link.

According to Felix Atagong’s unfinished project the freeware version seem to have had the hidden Easter Eggs removed, plus despite the update there has been no new content added. This means the original walkthroughs are still valid for the Remastered classic mode and freeware version all of which can be found via the following links:

You’ll need to rename and convert the music you wish to use before changing it.

Alternative Games:

Vertigo games are offering several games for free. Acid bomb and Acid bomb 2which are precursors to today’s giveaway are a couple of them. Wizzard of Ozz actually posted some of the freeware Vertigo games a while back as part of our ongoing free games for the weekdays project. You can find download links those games below:

Prisms of Light 1 & 2

You have to guide light using prisms (really!):

You can download Prisms of Light 1 & 2 HERE

Sandbox of God:

This game was recently upgraded and has been released as a commercial game for less than $5. The original version is still available as freeware though. I purchased the updated version and apart from some minor graphic enhancements I found little difference between the freeware and commercial version. You can find details of the freeware version via the following link:

You can find details of the freeware version HERE and a download link for the freeware version of the Sandbox of God from the developer HERE

Vivid Conceptions:

A great platformer.

You can download Vivid conceptions HERE

The original version of Shellblastcalled Acidbonmb and its sequel Acidbomb 2can be downloaded from the following links. I’ve quoted the information found on the Vertigo gaming website for each of the games :

Acidbomb:

You can download Acidbomb HERE

Acidbomb is a fifty level puzzle game where you must find the pistons used to trigger a bomb and defuse them before time runs out. There are many bombs scattered around the world, from biological bombs that have hair-sensitive triggers to napalm bombs that are exploding at the seams, to nuclear warheads that have challenged even the highest trained bomb disposal agent.

Along with this game you get the Virtual Bomb Simulator which allows you to make your own bombs, and a mini-game called Acidrop that is completely different from the rest of the game…but you’ll see that for yourself.

Given that all the bombs in the game have random pistons, you will never EVER solve a bomb the same way twice. Ever.

Acidbomb 2: Rearmed:

You can download Acidbomb 2: Rearmed HERE

Quote:

Acidbomb 2: Rearmed is the sequel to the acclaimed Acidbomb (noted by such sites as Gamespy.com and in the Top 100 Free Games of 2006 on 1up.com) that takes the original and gives it a complete overhaul. If you thought the first game was too easy or unbalanced…you’re in for a treat. This game is for the casual and hardcore puzzle fanatic alike.

The objective: secure the world by defusing bombs from criminals and terrorists alike. As you crack down on this new and dangerous threat, the technology improves with both the Homeland Security team (new weapons) and the terrorists (new bomb types, such as Biological, Oxidation and more). We also have reason to believe that there are several nuclear bombs hidden in major public areas in the United States, Europe and Japan…and the clock is ticking…

With over fifty levels, unlockable content and mini-games and more, you’ll be busy fighting the terrorist threat for quite a while.

There are several more free games from the Vertigo site, which have been posted in the free games for the weekdays project, so I’m not going to mention them here

Here’s a selection of simple but interesting games from Cactusquid. You’ll find a nice collection of arcade games in the first download called Cactus Arcade most of which I’ve also posted as separate downloads, then there’s a whole pile of games rated ‘cold’ to ‘on fire’, cold being not very popular to on fire being the best games. I’ve only selected warm to on fire games plus maybe a few that interested me, but there are loads more to check out. What’s cold to some may be hot to others. I was going to separate the games into single posts, so that I could add the genre to the title, but decided not to. I’d really appreciate comments as to your thoughts on the ones you found really interesting. All the downloads can be found HERE though I’ve also added alternative download links to most of the games. Several of the games did have online high score availability, but the site that hosted those scores has been closed.

Cactus Arcade – mixed genres (45Mb)

This mixed bag of 17 games is a collection of the best Cactus arcade games ranging from shoot em ups and platformers to adventure games and first person shooters.
The pack contains:

Burn the trash, Clean Asia!, Fractal Fighter, Fuck Space, God Came to the Cave, Illegal Communication, Minubeat, Mondo Agency, Mondo Mecials, MSOIDS, Protoganda, Psychosomnium, Retro II, Seizuredome, Shotgun Ninja, The Design and xWUNG.

Video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZP96ldF3cFg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_GiZUKFsc4

Downloads:

You can download Cactus Arcade or any of the games I’ve posted below from HERE

————————————————————————————

The following 23 games cover several different genres. Some of the games are very basic, with maybe only a few days work put into them, whereas others have had a lot of work put into them; however, they all have a couple of things in common (apart from being developed by the same game maker), they are innovative and fun to play. I’ve not got videos or images for a few of the games, but will endeavor to add these sometime this weekend. I need to go work on this weekends game giveaways now.

Lovecraft Game – Action (3.2Mb)

As the man in the hat you take up arms to defeat hordes of the undead, vampire dogs and faceless Colossi, all to find the treasure hidden in the ghastly forest.

Featuring unique graphics and atmospheric music, this game is quite interesting to look at.

However, it was made as a last minute entry for a competition with a theme I couldn’t quite get a good grasp of, and hence turned out pretty bland.

Stench Mechanics is a short science fiction adventure created during No More Sweden (a Swedish gaming jam).

It features a short and suspenseful storyline onboard a space ship fuelled by a smelly pink gas. There are three different endings depending on some choices you make, and the game features both sex and violence. Therefore it might not be recommendable for younger players.

Precision – Arcade (1.6Mb)

Precision is a game about sprinting, jumping and collecting bottles mysteriously placed on rooftops. It’s an exercise in frustration, trial & error and memmorizing levels.

Interesting features include a background that reacts to the music and the possibillity to jump between day and night.

I found the game a little frustrating at first, but found myself getting more and more interested in it. The game is quite hard to master, but once you do, there’s a lot of atisfaction at being able to win a level. I’ve never played an arcade game quite like it before. when you jump from block to block, you don’t stop like you’d expect, you move as though you’ve landed on ice, so you need to time your jumps perfectly.

Use the arrow keys for moving left and right and the up arrow for jumping.

How do you defeat an army of attacking enemies without any default means of attacking them? You have them shoot each other.

In Kryzta the player must rely on cleaver maneuvering to rack up a good highscore. The enemies leave points which has to be assimilated when destroyed. However, collecting points makes the player grow and become an easier target.

This game is not your typical shoot ‘em up. There’s really no room for bullet dodging here, just blow everything up before it hits you. The game has some very nice explosions.

The game features some slightly obscene imagery, so if you’re a bit easily offended, don’t play the game. Nothing too bad, just maybe not suitable for kids.

There are numerous ways to earn points in this game, from reaching the exit in the quickest time possible to eliminating all the enemies in each level. Proficiency with the wall jump technique is a prerequisite skill.

This game’s graphics were inspired by old movies with special effects made without the use of computers. The gameplay is a fairly straight boss fight flare, with a focus on time, rather than lives.

You start out with three minutes playtime. Defeating a boss gives you an extra fifteen seconds. Being killed deducts forty. If the timer reaches zero, you die. There are two different gameplay modes, “absorb” and “shield”.

This game could be described as an illogical puzzle game played from a first person view, with plenty of bizarre elements. And it’s downright evil. Most of the levels are designed to confuse you, and the solutions aren’t always that easy to figure out.

Move around with the arrow keys and press Z to interact with stuff (There are in game instructions, but they might not be that easy to interpret). There are eight levels total, good luck beating them all!

This game is kind of a semi-shmup. The only thing keeping it from being a full blown one is that you can’t actually shoot… You play by moving the mouse to swing a ball. The ball’s attached to a “wire”, and both of ‘em kill enemies on contact. Be careful of the debris as it’s deadly. There are bosses that appear with regular intervals. Make large combos to get good scores!

The game’s supposed to look like a trashy fever nightmare. Look out for the motion blur from hell.

Your ship is equipped with extremely destructive weapons, but as usual the enemies are no easy targets either. Hold the Z key for a standard beam, or press the X key to clear bullets caught in your blue beam’s path. Use both keys together for a special attack which causes massive damage, but use it with care as this weapon tends to overcraft and may destroy your craft altogether. An online high score submission feature is included, and you can press C to play with an alternative ship.

X: Fire beam against bullets

The game’s your average stylish bossfight bullet hell shmup, with a scoring system that puts focus on combos. It’s a fairly gentle one, with a rather friendly start for the beginners, although it gets a bit difficult at the last few bosses (there are ten in total, as well as the optional randomly generated bosses). The player is allowed to choose how many lives he’ll have, but the scoring will drop the more lives you select.

The controls are generally pretty simple. Use Z to fire your machine guns, and X to shoot a laser that goes through anything, but has a lower damage/fire rate. You can also use C to find nearest hostile unit of the enemy’s current active weapon layer. There is a trick to this though, if you align with the crosshair that shows up and press C again when you hear a little beep, you’ll shoot out a few homing missiles. Enter and arrow keys to navigate the menu and to move the ship.

Clean Asia – Shmup (5.6Mb)

The eyes of mankind has decided to leave their hosts and take over the earth. Their first move was to escape to the moon, where they developed their hostile weapon technology. Ten years later they return and forcefully take over some prominent countries in Asia. Thailand and New Korea has both succumb to the hostile threat, while China insists on dealing with the eyes themselves and refuses any helping hands from around the world.

America sends a pair of pilot twins with extroardinary sixth senses to battle against the evil eyes. They both have designed their own space ships that seems to be about the only thing in existance that can be used to battle these terrible fiends.

There are two different pilots to choose from in Clean Asia!, and they both have their own ways of handling hostiles. The first pilot is the choice best suited for people with skills, while the second one is more suitable for beginners.

The first pilot uses a thrust move to destroy pieces of the enemy. These pieces shatter when destroyed, and the shatters can be sucked towards the player, to later be tossed at the next piece of the enemy. The thrust move makes the ship invulnerable during the burst. This makes it ideal for flying through bullets if you’re caught in a pinch. Finally, some enemies carry weapons that they drop when shot, pilot one can pick these up and use them against the enemy.

The second pilot is more like a standard shoot ‘em up ship. It has unlimited amounts of ammunition, but the strength of the bullets can be upgraded by collecting enemy debris. The ship comes with a charge feature that can fire a deadly burst, but it immobilizes the player while charging, which makes it a gamble to use in some situations. When you have reached a debris count of two hundred or more, you can also release a huge energy blast, that will deal some great damage in all directions. There’s also a very handy shield that you can use if you get into a tough situation. This shield drains your debris pretty fast, though, so be careful to pick the right situations to use it.

You can select what stage to play on the map screen. All stages are slightly different from each other, both in appearance and enemy behaviour. You must complete all stages in a row to beat the game.

Clean Asia! was designed for (and won) the Autofire 2007 competition at http://www.shmup-dev.com, it has three levels and two selectable ships (with distinct controlling differencies and weapons/abillities), fourteen bosses and around ten regular enemies.

The Design – Arena Shmup (1.8Mb)

Don’t let the basic graphics put you off this excellent game. I was totally confused when I first played this game, but once you get it, it’s a very rewarding experience playing.

This game is an unusual gaming experience, yet more normal than it seems. It’s a 2D shooter with some unique quirks. The graphics are simplified and stylish, and makes the game look a bit confusing. The controls make the game even more confusing (before you get used to them, that is).

You control two dots on a design, which can shoot at the angle from one to the other. New figures on the design appears and you earn points by removing them. This is what the shooting is for. Note that the enemies can only be killed while they’re white. If you shoot an enemy while it’s red, the bullet will turn against you. Aside from the normal shooting, you also have three upgrades that’ll help you with getting a highscore.

Illegal Communication – Adventure (1.3Mb)

A description would be going against the concept of this game. You have to figure everything out on your own, even the controls ( although you only use the mouse ). How to make progress is up to you to discover!

The following is an excellent review

Illegal Communication is a stylish ‘cyber-adventure’ unlike any game I’ve seen before, GM or otherwise. Unlike many GM games that make the attempt, the game succeeds brilliantly at drawing in the player with its purely mysterious, abstract atmosphere, and despite the apparent simplicity of the graphics, sound and gameplay, this is a game with a great deal of depth to it.

The game really sort of defies traditional genre classification; it contains elements of platform, arcade and puzzle games in basically equal doses. I don’t want to give too extensive a description, as that sort of would eliminate the fun of figuring out what to do and how to do it (incidentally a large part of the game). However, as a small disclaimer, I’d like to mention that the game is very difficult; unneccesarily so, in my opinion, specifically since there are save points, but your progress is deleted if you exit the game. Some may not find this a big problem, as the game is short enough to (theoretically) play through in one sitting. It certainly bothered me, though. As far as storyline, what is there is very abstract, though the careful player may be able to decipher it.

The first thing you will probably notice when playing Illegal Communication is the highly minimalistic graphics scheme. In fact, minimalistic is rather too weak a term; monochromatic would be more accurate. Everything is either black or green, and, with only a few exceptions, abstract and starkly geometric in design. There is hardly any shade variation, either; however, this is part of the highly unique stylishness of the game, which I’ll address in a moment.

The sound effects are all very well done, and, like the graphics, simple but effective. The same cannot be said for the music; it was, indeed, simple (it consists of a single track), but I felt it only served to detract from the overall mystery and wonder of the game. However, I know others have enjoyed it, so maybe that’s just me.

The graphics, sound and gameplay combined are what make this game exceptional, however. The great part of this game is the style. Of course, style is something that is both abstract, and therefore difficult to describe, and not apparent (or appealing) to every gamer. In this case, when I say style, I mean that the flickering monochrome graphics lend the game a surreal, retro sort of feel, and the gameplay adds an almost foreboding feeling on top of that. The overall effect is something similar to that of hacking into a government computer network (or so I would imagine). That being said, I suggest playing it in the dark with the sound off.

Oh, and apparently there is some kind of moral/meaning entrenched in this little game. Tell me if you think you’ve found it- I never did.

There are three types of enemies; squares, triangles and crosses. The bullets does no harm to the crosses unless you’ve got the homing bullets power up. The other enemies go down with eight shots or so… The bombs are a bit hard to control, and if they hit you they get absorbed by your vessel (unless you have the multibomb power up), but you can get them to orbit around you with a bit of maneuvering.

Your vessel has an unlimited amount of bullets, but firing them drains energy. However, your energy is recharged automatically when you top firing. Your energy capacity can also be upgraded by picking up upgrades (the ones that look like ‘U’s with a circle. When you reach upgrade level four, you shoot twice as many bullets and can have twice as many bombs on the screen simultaneously. When you reach level 11 or 12 you shoot thrice as many bullets, and can have 22 bombs on the screen at the same time. After that the upgrades serve to increase your energy capacity and refuels your energy.

There are also four power ups; laser, multibomb, homing bullets and slow motion. The powerups look like ‘P’s.

Insect Invade II is the long awaited sequel to Insect Invade. Actually, it’s more like a remake of Insect Invade with lots of fun stuff added.

It’s a two-dimensional shooter where you are a drunken man trying to defend himself from the invading insects. Of course, these bugs will not give up easily, they will hunt you down!

The graphics are vastly improved, but retain the same feel as in the old game. The developer has added lots of new things, such as explosions, light effects, enhanced backgrounds and a lots more

New elements to the game play has also been added. You can now shoot in 360°, dodge your enemies by jumping over them, climb the piles of carcasses left by all the insects you’ve slain, toss grenades and pick up a few new power ups!

The sound has also been thoroughly reworked, with midi music and great sound effects!

However, this is still just a tiny arcade game. It was created in less than two days and was never meant to be very serious. Expect some good, clean fun; nothing more, nothing less!

7th Legion (33.4Mb)

7th Legion… well, this game is somewhat similar to Command & Conquer. “Yes, another C&C clone,” you may think, but this game is somewhat unique in a way.
The story is about two factions, the 7th Legion and The Chosen. It takes place in a future in which the Earth has been overpopulated and its precious natural resources are running out! Many scientists broadcast warnings of impending doom! The governments of Earth enact the PEP – the Planetary Evacuation Program – to safely get everyone off Earth into space on massive Colony ships, thus giving the planet a chance to heal.

However, when they said “everyone,” they didn’t mean the entire population, and there was even a lottery that was created to see who would be lucky enough to escape the mass famine and chaos that was to come sooner or later. It quickly became apparent to many people that only the most worthy specimens of the human race – the smart, powerful, and rich – were going to get aboard one of those ships preparing to jump into hyperspace.
In the centuries following the evacuation, much of Earth’s population perished. The survivors, the somewhat scattered tribes of those left behind, started forming themselves into seven “Legions,” all vying for control of what was left. The events of the past, the PEP, and the evacuation all clouded into myth and legend. The most well-known legend tells of the “Returning,” a time of war, when the Chosen will come back to claim the Earth, with three signs signaling their return: The Night without Darkness, The Day without Light, and the Rain of Fire.

As the game begins, the seventh generation of the Chosen, those descended from the evacuees, have returned as once said, and are prepared to make war on the descendants of those left behind, who have united under the banner of the most powerful of all the legions: the 7th Legion, hence the game’s title!

The game does have a Command & Conquer feeling, but you don’t collect resources; you get them every few minutes, and combat is somewhat different thanks to power cards and power-ups. Power cards can either be positive or negative to the player or the enemy!

Also, power-ups are crates scattered around the map which can include invisibility, rapid-fire, or the ability to inflict extra damage if collected by a unit. When a unit collects a crate, any nearby units near the crates also receive the bonus!

What sets 7th Legion apart from most Command & Conquer clones is that the player and his enemy can use power cards. These items are at the top right of the screen, and you basically drag one of them to a friendly or enemy unit, where it will have an effect: some cards destroy or damage units and some may be helpful in other ways, such as making the units invisible or stronger in battle! Also, unlike in most games in which you collect credits, in this game you receive a certain amount every few minutes. The base amount is 7500, but this can increase if you kill more enemy troops. You also can get special orders which will tell you, for example, to destroy several of their troops or buildings, and in return, you’ll receive a nice amount of bonus credits!

The game has a few flaws, such as one of the early problems within the RTS genre: unit pathfinding. Sometimes, if you select a great amount of units all together they will split up all over the map if not controlled properly. Another one is that if you are facing the CPU in a skirmish battle, it could be a bit too easy for an RTS expert. If you know how to play this game well you could win in ten minutes or so, but apart from that, the game is very good. Despite its flaws, this game can be quite fun!

General Information:

Unzip the zip file, go into the 7th legion folder, click on setup, install the game, then unzip No-CD.zip you will get a .exe file called legion.exe or LEGION, Copy this into: C:\Program Files\Microprose\7th Legion and accept the overwriting the oringal file, and play!

How to run the game:

If the game is not displayed properly under Windows, download XP Fix (available from the same page as the download link as an Extra to this game), unzip and place the file DDRAW.DLL inside the main folder of the game (same way as the NO-CD crack). There’s also a manual available rom a link at the top of the download page.

Magic Carpet: (75.2Mb)

Magic Carpet is about exactly what it sounds like: a magic carpet. And you’re sitting on it. You fly around an Arabian landscape with water, hills, and trees. The story of the game is simple: there was a great war between wizards. The wizards used more and more destructive spells and ended up summoning monsters which often turned against them. There was one wizard who wanted to end everything with an all-powerful spell. Instead, the worlds shattered.

The wizard died, but his apprentice is still alive, and guess what… that’s you!
The gameplay is unique. You’re flying around collecting mana and building a castle, which serves as your base and a place to store your mana. You can upgrade the castle by collecting more mana. To collect mana, you need to kill monsters which, upon death, drop golden balls. Mana is used to cast spells; the more of it you have, the more spells you can cast.

However, monsters aren’t the only things which will cross your path. There are also wizards who will battle you for the mana.

This is a great game that combines combat and thinking. However, it is very difficult. At first you might be confused, as there is no real tutorial in the game. However, when you get the hang of it, you should enjoy it. One tip is to stick around a single map until you find all the spells on the map, instead of rushing through them without even looking for spells. It’s worth it, as they can be very useful. The spells are found in specific locations on some maps and are represented by red flasks.

The music and sound in this game are very good, but there is something else that’s good. No, not good – it’s great. The graphics are stunning. I mean, the game is really old, but the graphics are just awesome.

If you’re up for a challenge, try Magic Carpet. You will spend many, many hours in this game, as it’s very addictive.

The game works with XP or DOSBox. I’ve not tested it on Vista or Win 7 yet, but you should be able to try compatibility mode first and if that doesn’t work try DOSBox.

This weeks midweek madness sale is 50% off Nation Red for 3.99 pounds (approx $6) instead of 7.99 pounds. Nation Red is an indie zombie shooter akin to the old alien shooters, but with much better graphics. I found this game hard at first as it feels open ended (that is it never seemed to end, but that was only because it was so manic, with zombies coming from all directions). You have to survive a particular amount of time to progress to the next level. It took me many attempts before I finally got to the second level, but once you get the hang of it it does become easier. There’s a massive array of weapons to pick up throughout the game. You can check the game out via the following link. ther’s a video and several images, or you can check one of the videos I’ve posted below.

If you like fast action, then this game will appeal. If your reactions are slow, i’d give this one a miss:

August 17, 1977

Scattered groups of zombies infiltrate remote Midwestern towns. Incapable of using tools or weapons, the invaders are resisted until they retreat back into the desert. Special elimination posses are set up to hunt down any of the surviving undead. Six weeks after the squads started their search-and-destroy mission, the last known zombie was shot and killed.

Present-day

Over thirty years had passed when a truck driver traveling down a desolate Arizona road plows into a wall of undead. Before the driver’s phone signal went dead, he reported some were carrying guns… They’re back and now they are hunting us.

Gemstonia

Gemstonia is a game that’s sort of like Bejeweled, except with a twist, literally. Instead of swapping two adjacent gems, you rotate three gems, clockwise or counterclockwise. It’s like combining Bejeweled and Hexic together. It’s an interesting concept, but the developer, Lopens (who gave away Trio last Saturday), have released the game as unfinished (hence free). It’s not very polished, and there are no sounds, but this game is still very interesting for demonstrating a concept.

(The game was released on Facebook, so there is no official game page.)
Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lopens-Games/107100382678094

The game is a fresh new release, only since Wednesday.

Notes:

If you’re using a 1680*1050 resolution, be sure to lower it a notch or else the game refuses to run.

Try pressing the keys on your keyboard. There are a few that do interesting things.

There are two game modes. The difference between them is one is timed and the other is not.

This is alpha software, so expect bugs!

You can buy a copy of Alien Breed: Impact via Steam for only £6,49 or a double pack so that you can play with your friends online for only £9.74. That’s like getting one free and 25% off the second copy. There’s a great single player campaign as well as a multiplayer co-op campaign. The game is controller enabled so if you have an X-Box controller with a USB converter you can use that instead of the keyboard. It’s a 3D version of the original top down alien shooter. One of the first of it’s kind. I used to own a copy of the first one on floppy disk.

This is the latest in a series of games going right back to the early 90′s. You can also see a video of Obliteration HERE
